“The continued deterioration of respect for the rule of law and human
 rights, and the independence of the judiciary in Turkey”
 is a source of concerns for States

The United Nations Human Rights Council, main body within the UN system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights, concluded its 48th session in Geneva, last Monday 11 October. Members of the Council, as well as Independent Experts of the Council (Special Procedures), had the opportunity to discuss human rights issues worldwide, including human rights situations that require the Council’s attention.

Among these latest situations, the Turkish human rights’ situation had been mentioned at several occasions. Turkey’s respect for human rights and rule of law principles had indeed been constantly deteriorating since the Coup attempt of July 2016: discriminations on multiple grounds, abuse of anti-terror legal frameworks, mass detentions and arrests of people under the pretext of preserving national security, including of pregnant women, sometimes detained with their infant, enforced disappearances and abroad abduction, torture, violations of the right to a fair trial, of the right to privacy, of the right to freedom of expression, of freedom of association and of peaceful assembly, silencing and harassment of human rights defenders…

The United States, Greece, Cyprus, and Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden, member states of the European Union, expressed their concerns over the deterioration of human rights in Turkey.
